This course will give students a general knowledge and appreciation of the Sacred Scriptures. Through their study of the Bible they will come to encounter the living Word of God; Jesus Christ. In the course, students will learn about the Bible, authored by God through Inspiration, and its value to people throughout the world. They will learn how to read the Bible and will become familiar with the major sections of the Bible and the books included in each section. The students will pay particular attention to the Gospels, where they may grow to love Jesus Christ more personally.

In this course of study, students will come to understand all that God has done for us through his Son, Jesus Christ, and will learn that for all eternity, God has planned for us to share eternal happiness with him, which is accomplished through the redemption Christ won for us. Students will learn that they share in this redemption only in and through Jesus Christy. The will also be introduced to what it means to be a disciple of Christ and what life as a disciple entails.

The goal of this course is to help students understand that in and through the Church they encounter the living Jesus Christ. They will be introduced to the fact that the Church was founded by Christ through the Apostles and is sustained by him through the Holy Spirit. The students will come to know that the church is the living Body of Christ today. This Body has both divine and human elements. In this course, students will learn not so much about the events in the life of the Church but about the sacred nature of the Church.

In the broadest sense of the word, philosophy is simply a natural attempt to gain a deeper insight into our own personal lives as well as into the cumulative intellectual history of humankind. To philosophize means to clarify our experience through reflection. To become more fully human, we must become more thoughtful. We must possess a more practical understanding of our world, a more than mechanical image of ourselves, and a more than routine familiarity with the moral realm. Considered from this point of view, philosophy is both easy and challenging; easy because it only requires thought; challenging because sustained thinking demands courage, patience, and an almost unlimited degree of openness. Through this course, please keep in mind the following insight of Martin Heidegger, one of the greatest contemporary philosophers: “Its’ not what we can do with philosophy, but what philosophy can do to us.”

This one semester CHS course is available to seniors and explores the major religions of the world: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Vedic (formerly Hinduism), and Buddhism. This course aims to examine the origins of religion to better define and describe it as a human phenomenon. These examinations and explorations will deepen the students’ understandings of religion’s profound influence in shaping human culture and expressing human needs. A basic understanding of the five major world religions is developed through the lens of creed, code, and ceremony. The students will explore the foundational rules of faith and spirituality, human growth and development, and in the shaping of human cultures. This College in High School course is offered through Seton Hill University.
