This course will explore the elements of two-dimensional design. Students will use a variety of materials in both theoretical and practical uses. Topics will include composition, color, and visual communication. The history and function of design will also be examined. 2-D Art encourages students to embrace the influences of the creative world around them. Students, based on the NCCAS Visual Standards, who enjoy drawing will improve skills, for the beginner or accomplished student. Students begin with basic drawing skills and explore a variety of drawing mediums. Students will cover landscape, portrait, still life, and abstract drawing. Students learn to “see” more artistically and become more observant through practice.

What is good design? How does the shape of something contribute to how well it works, or how willing we are to use it? This introductory course will consider shape as a dynamic quality. Positive and negative form, surface and the way something feels will be considered as components of a good design. Assignments will involve forming, fabrication, and joining of various materials. This course emphasizes developing manual skills and conceptual functions in order to present a unified, well-crafted three-dimensional design. The ability to generate original solutions to design problems will require basic drawing skills, creative thinking and artistic exploration of possible approaches. This introduction to the basic visual elements through critical analysis as well as the physical manipulation of a variety of art medias will also use demonstrations, study well known works and artists, art history, and commonplace 3D designs to illustrate the role of 3D design..
